Moreover, in England there is a unit known variously as a ceremonial county or a geographic county. The various local units were gradually integrated by the state, which exacted obligations from them regarding peace, crime and police duties, taxes, military supplies, assistance to the poor, and highways. A similar convention applies to the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
